Biopsychology Flashcards
What are the two main functions of the nervous system
- To collect, process & respond to information in the environment
- To coordinate different organs and cells in the body
What are the four lobes
- The Frontal lobe
- The occupital lobe
- The temporal lobe
- Paretal lobe
What are the functions of the four lobes
Frontal Lobe = Responsible for high order decisions (e.g planning, decision making and logical reasoning
Occupital lobe = Processes visual info in the eyes
Temporal Lobe = processes auditory information and is involved in memory
Parietal lobe = Interprets sensory information and spatial awareness
What is spatial awareness
The ability to be aware of objects in space and the body’s position in relation to them
Spine: Functions and location in the body
Connected to the brain via the brain stem
Provides the brainwith messages from the rest of the body
Responsible for reflex actions
Function of the peripheral nervous system
transmits messagesvia millions of neurons to and from CNS+
Function of theAutonomic nervous system
controls vital body functions such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal, stress responses and temp is maintained and adapted to the environment
The Autonomic nervous systemis broken up into two further segments. What are they calleed
- sympathetic nervous system
- parasympathetic nervous system
What is the process of the synaptic transmission
Electrical impulses reach the presynaptic terminal. They trigger release of neurotransmitters from synapse vehicles. They diffuse across the synaptic cleft
