BIOM PART TWO - CUE CARDS Flashcards
What is POMC?
Proopiomelanocortin
What are Convertases?
Enzymes that cleaves POMC
What do different converses do?
Give rise to different products
What does the melaocortin System consist of?
13 components from POMC
What are the 4 Post-Translational peptides?
a-MSH, b-MSH, y-MSH, ACTH
What are the 5 Melanocortin Receptors?
7-membrane. G-protein Coupled
MCR-1 —- MCR-5
What are the 2 Melanocortin Antagonist?
AgRP (Agouti)
What are two proteins that modulate Melanocortin Activity?
Mahogany, Syndecan-3
What is the 1 Opiod Protein?
B-endorphin
What is the Post-Translational Processing of POMC?
Tissue/cell specific
How is it tissue specific?
Different POMC peptides will be produced by different cell types
Control of Range of physiological functions by the same prohormone
What is a-MSH function when produced in brain
Inhibit food intake
What is a-MSH function when produced in skin?
Acts on Melanocytes to produce skin pigmentation
What are MCRs produced in?
Brain, Adrenals, Penis, Skin
What is the a-MSH pathway?
1.) a-MSH binds to MCR-1
2.) G-protein coupled, Camp, PKA, CREB
3.) CREB synthesizes MITF
3.) MITF starts Txn of Tyr and DCT which results in skin pigmentation
What are Agouti Mice?
A result of an overproduction of Agouti protein in the skin
What is Agouti protein in the skin?
MCR1 Antagonist in the Skin (yellow mutation)
What is Agouti Protein in the brain?
MCR4 Antagonist (obesity, hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance)
