Biology topic 8 Flashcards
Function of cerebrum
Conscious activities e.g vision, hearing, speech, thinking and memory
Cerebral cortex
Thin outer layer of cerebrum
Made up of neurones
Highly folded- increases SA, no. of neurones
More neurone- more connections made
Brain able to carry out more complex behaviours
Hypothalamus
Controls homeostatic mechanisms
Regulating body temp, osmoregulation, digestive activity, endocrine functions
Pituitary gland
Located below hypothalamus
Produces hormones
Posterior pituitary
Stores + releases hormones produced by hypothalamus
Anterior pituitary
Produces and releases hormones
Cerebellum
Coordinates movement and balance
Medulla oblongata
Co-ordination centres- cardiac/respiratory centres controlling HR and breathing rate
Potential difference
Difference in electrical activity between inside and outside a cell
Resting potential
Potential difference across membrane while neurone is at rest
Function of sodium-potassium pump
Maintains a negative resting potential
Protein that uses ATP to pump against conc gradient
Ensures outside is more positive than the inside
Na/K pump process
- ATP is hydrolysed –> ADP + Pi
- Energy released to push 3Na+ out cell
- 2K+ inside cell
Permeability of the neurone membrane
Permeable to K+ and not Na+
Pathway of stimulation across a synapse
Pre synaptic neurone –> synaptic cleft –> post-synaptic neurone
