Biology: Medical Technologies Flashcards
1
Q
MRI
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for (4)
- How to read results?
A
- Computer producing images of tissues (muscles/organs)
- Conditions: Tumours, Brain disorders, spinal cord, eye
- Color contrast
2
Q
CT scan
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- X-rays to produce image of inside the body
- Brain Injuries or used to diagnose issues in organs (pancreas, liver, intestines, & kidneys)
- Change in colour of an organ indicates abnormality
3
Q
PET
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Uses a radioactive drug (tracer) to show typical & atypical metabolic activity
- Organs/tissues, blood in mucous, cancer, brain & heart disorders
- Abnormality shown by high SUV numbers and compare it to your medical history
4
Q
X-ray
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Pushes radiation through the patient; high amounts of radiation
- Examine bones, joints, tissue problems, fractures
- different shades of black and white
5
Q
Ultrasound
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- High frequency sound waves / echos
- development of baby in the womb / screening for diseases affecting internal parts of the body
- Compare to a healthy person’s image (shape, size, placement of organs, blood vessel, tissue density)
6
Q
Angiogram
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Type of x-ray used to check blood vessels that a normal x-ray wouldn’t show
- Health of blood vessels, blood flow, shortness of breath, fatigue, back/chest pain
- Blocks in arteries/high blood pressure
7
Q
ECG
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Electrodes record electrical activity created by heart beats
- Heart conditions, abnormal heart rhythm, coronary heart disease
- Measure distance between R waves to indicate regular/irregular rhythm
8
Q
Fluoroscopy
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Live video of continuous x-rays that pass through body
- Heart/intestinal disease, look inside organs/joints/muscles/bones, impact surgeries
- TV monitor displays a live x-ray video
9
Q
Colonoscopy
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Is inserted through anus -> rectum -> colon
- Lining of your colon / rectum, look for abnormalities in tissues/polyps, cancer
- result is positive if the the tube detects abnormalities in colon
10
Q
Upper Endoscopy
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Tube with a light/camera on the end that enters through your mouth -> throat -> esophagus -> stomach -> small intestine
- Problems in upper digestive system, trouble swallowing, heartburn, vommiting quickly, feeling full
- camera on the endoscope projects an image on a screen to look for health issues (scars)
11
Q
Urinalysis
- How does it work?
- Conditions it is used for
- How to read results?
A
- Dipstick / plastic stick with strips of chemicals on it; change in colour signifies disease/infection
- Kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease
- Look at the colour change on the strip comparing it with colour table
