Biology - Circulatory System Flashcards
What does the circulatory system in your body carry?
Blood and dissolved substances to and from different places in your body
What is the heart’s job?
Pumping these things around the body
Blood Vessels
The heart pumps blood and substances around the body in tubes called blood vessels
2 things that make up the circulatory system
Heart and blood vessels
What is Double Circulatory System?
Has 2 parts / paths
What does the right side of the system deal with?
Deoxygenated blood
What does the left side of the system deal with?
Oxygenated Blood
3 types of blood vessels
- Artery
- Vein
- Capillary
3 point - Artery Definition (function)
- Carry blood AWAY from the hart
- Elastic fibres allow the artery to stretch under pressure
- The thick muscle can contract to PUSH the blood along
2 point - Vein Definition (function)
- Carry blood TOWARDS the heart
- Veins have valves
What are valves?
Veins have valves which act to STOP the blood from going in the wrong direction
2 point - Capillary Definition (function)
- Capillaries link arteries to veins
- They exchange materials between the blood and other body cells
What is the wall of a capillary made up of?
1 thick cell & is made up of epithelial tissue
What is a capillary bed?
A collection of capillaries
5 Parts of Blood - Veins:
- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
- Platelets
- Plasma
- Valves
What are Red Blood Cells: Haemoglobin
A molecule that is designed to hold and carry oxygen to cells that need it
What are white blood cells?
Protect the body from disease / platelets to help blood clot
What are platelets?
- Bits of broken off larger cells
- Form blood clot
3 circulatory system disorders
- High blood Pressure
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
High Blood pressure:
1. What’s the risk?
2. How to reduce the risk
3. Three symptoms
- Increased risk of heart attack / stroke
- Reducing salt, lowering stress, & regular exercises
- Symptoms
- Headaches
- Shortness of breath
- Heart racing
Heart Attack:
1. What happens?
2. Five symptoms
- PLAQUE builds up in arteries consisting of fat / calcium where the coronary artery slows or stops the blood flow to the HEART
- Symptoms:
- Tissue in the hear muscle starts to die due to lacking blood flow
- Chest Pain
- Trouble Breathing
- Discomfort in stomach
- Feeling Light headed
Stroke:
1. How’s it caused?
2. Five symptoms
- PLAQUE build up or a BLOOD CLOT in the arteries that prevents blood from getting to the BRAIN
- Symptoms:
- Paralyzed
- Losing Memory
- Lose motor-function
- Lose ability to speak
- Face drooping
If you were oxygenated blood, which vessel would you travel out of your heart from and what type of cell would you be?
The arteries since they take the blood away from the heart. This would be a red blood cell (production of oxygen).
