Biology Homework 7.12.24 Flashcards
Nutrients and Food Tests
Describe how to test for sugars.
Grind up food, mix with water. Add benedict reagent. Heat mixture to 60 degrees in water bath. Observe colour change.
Reorder the following in increasing size order; Organ, cell, tissue, organ system, organism.
Cell < Tissue < Organ < Organ system < Organism
What are carbohydrates made up of?
Simple sugars
State a hazard in doing food tests.
Ethanol is flammable/Buiret is corrosive.
Define digestion.
Breaking down of large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble substances.
State the importance of having carbohydrates in our diet.
Energy source - Break down glucose in respiration to release energy for metabolic reactions.
What is the positive test for starch?
Blue black.
Name a complex carbohydrate that is made up of glucose.
Starch and callulose.
What is the negative test for sugars?
Stays blue
Describe how to prepare food sample.
Grind up food using pestle and mortar. Transfer to test tube and add water.
Define tissue.
A group of cells with a similar structure working together for a specific function.
What is the negative test for lipids.
Solution remains colourless.
What is the positive test for lipids?
Cloudy appearance of solution.
What is the reagent used to test for proteins?
Buiret solution.
What is the positive test for sugars?
A range from yellow/green/orange/brick red. Green is an indicator of a low amount of sugar and brick red is for a high amount.
