Biology- Enzymes and digestion (year 9) Flashcards
What are enzymes produced by when involved in digestion?
produced by cells and then released into the gut
What are 3 examples of big molecules?
Starch, proteins and fats
What is wrong with the molecules?
They are too big to pass through the walls of the digestive system
What do the digestive enzymes do to the molecules?
They break these big molecules down into smaller once’s like sugar
What happens after the molecules can be passed through the walls of the digestive system?
They can be absorbed down to the bloodstream
What is an example of a carbohydrate?
Amylase
What does amylase do?
It breaks down starch
What 3 places is amylase made into?
The salivary glands, the pancreas, the small intestine
what does proteases do?
converts proteins into amino acids
What 3 places are proteases made in?
The stomach, the pancreas, the small intestine
what do lipases covert lipids into?
Glycerol and fatty acids
What 2 places are lipases made into?
the pancreas and small intestine
Where is bile produced?
In the liver
