Biology- cell organisation (year 9) Flashcards
What are made up of organ systems?
Large multi-cellular organisms
What makes up all living organisms?
Cells (the basic building blocks)
What do specialised cells form?
tissues, organs, organ systems
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
What are 3 examples of tissues?
Muscular tissue, glandular tissue, epithelial tissue
What is the function of a muscular tissue?
It contracts to move whatever it is attached to
What is the function of a glandular tissue?
It makes and secretes chemicals like enzymes and hormones
What is the function of a epithelial tissue?
It covers the outside and inside of the stomach
What are organs organised into?
Organ systems
What is an organ system?
a group of organs working together to form a particular function
What does the digestive system do?
breaks down and absorbs food
What organs is the digestive system made up of?
the glands (pancreas and salivary), the stomach, the liver, the small intestines, the large intestines
What is the function of the glands?
the glands produce digestive juices
What is the function of the stomach?
The stomach digests food
What does the liver produce?
Bile
