BIOLOGY, Digestive system, Biological molecules Flashcards
What are biological molecules?
Substances produced by cells and living organisms that are essential for life.
What are some examples of biological molecules?
Carbohydrates, Lipids, proteins.
What is starch?
A type of carbohydrate that provides energy for our bodies.
What does a lipid do and what are they made of?
Stores energy and helps to protect our organs. They are made up of fatty acids and glycerol.
What are the three enzymes for biological molecules?
Lipase, Protease, Carbohydrase.
What is the definition of excretion?
The removal of metabolic waste products from the body.
What is the organization of living things?
Cells-Tissue-Organs-Organ system-Organism
What is the function of the rectum?
An 8 - inch chamber that connects the colon to the anus.
What is amylase?
An enzyme in the human body that break down food.
What is the oesophagus?
A muscular tube where food is pushed through into the stomach by a series of contractions called peristalsis.
What does the pancreas do?
Produces digestive enzymes which break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It also makes insulin.
Define digestion.
The breaking down of more complex food into simpler molecules so that it can be absorbed and utilised by the cells.
What is an organ?
A group of tissues performing a specific function.
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with a similar structure and function.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs which work together to form organisms.
