Biology (Day 17; Photosynthesis) Flashcards
Understand the lesson
photosynthesis
the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of sugars
Photoautotroph
an organism that produces its food using light energy
Chloroplast
the organelle in which photosynthesis occurs
Thylakoids
disc-like structures within a chloroplast that help absorb light
Grana
stacks of thylakoids in a chloroplast
Chlorophyll
A pigment found in the thylakoid that absorbs light energy and uses it to produce carbohydrates
Stroma
Fluid-filled space surrounding the grana
What are the reactants and products of photosynthesis?
reactants: carbon dioxide, water, and solar (light) energy; products: oxygen and glucose
What are the two stages of photosynthesis?
light-dependent reactions and the Calvin Cycle
Where do the light-dependent reactions take place, and what occurs during them?
they take place in the thylakoid membrane; during it, light energy is captured by chloroplasts and stored as ATP
Where does the Calvin Cycle take place, and what occurs during them?
It takes place in the stroma; during it, ATP is used to create sugars
Why is a plant green?
they REFLECT green light
