Biology (Day 14; Enzymes) Flashcards
Understand the lesson
Enzyme
A biological catalyst (usually a protein)
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being changed
Substrate
The reactant molecule that an enzyme works on
Active site
the part of the enzyme where the substrate binds
How does temperature affect enzyme activity?
higher temperatures speed up a reaction, and lower temperatures slow down a reaction; however, extremely high temperatures can cause an enzyme to lose its shape and stop working
How does pH affect enzyme activity?
each enzyme has its optimum pH range; changing the pH outside of this range will slow down enzyme activity
How does enzyme concentration affect enzyme activity?
increasing the enzyme concentration will speed up the reaction, as long as there is available substrate to bind to
How does substrate concentration affect enzyme activity?
increasing substrate concentration increases the rate of reaction until all of the enzymes have bound
Are enzymes reusable?
yes
