biology cellular stuff Flashcards
Cellular Respiration
The process by which cells in plants and animals break down sugar and turn it into energy
ATP
(Adenosine Triphosphate)
Energy source available to the cells
Energy
The ability to do work.
Glucose
The biggest source of energy. It is too big to get into the mitochondria, so it must first be broken down
Aerobic Respiration
Cellular Respiration that requires oxygen
Anaerobic Respiration
Cellular respiration that occurs in the absence of oxygen
Fermentation
Done by yeast and bacteria
Lactic Acid
Done by animals (sore muscles)
Cellular Respiration equation
C2H12O6 + O2 = CO2 + H2O
Glycolysis
The process of breaking down glucose molecules into pyruvic acid.
Citric Acid Cycle (Kreb’s Cycle)
A series of chemical reactions that creates electrons and NADH+ which are necessary for the next step.
Electron Transport Chain
O2 binds with H+ to create H2O
Chemiosmosis
H+ Ions enter the inner cristae of the mitochondria using ATP synthase
what’s the chemical formula for glucose?
C6 H12 O6
