Biology Flashcards
Phospholipid Head
Hydrophilic - water loving
Phospholipid Tail
Hydrophobic - water fearing (repulsion of water)
Water
Both sides of the cell membrane are surrounded by water molecules
Peripheral proteins
Located on the interior surface and exterior surface of the membrane
Integral proteins
The proteins that are embedded in the bilayer
bilayer
The space between the two layers that are created by the phospholipids
Cell size
Cells are limited in size by amount of surface area they have compared to their total volume (the amount of space that is taken up)
diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
osmosis
Movement of WATER from an area of H -> L
Process by which water molecules diffuse across a cell membrane
equilibrium
Happens when the concentration of molecules of a substance of a substance is the same throughout a space
Turgor pressure
Pressure that water molecules exert against the cell wall
homeostasis
The process of maintaining stable internal conditions of a living thing. (Ex: Blood, body temperatures.)
solution
A mixture in which one or more substances are uniformly distributed in another substance
solvent
The substance in which the solute is dissolved (usually water)
solute
The substances dissolved in the solution (salt, sugar, etc)
