When the Couple find it Difficult to, or are Unable to, Conceive Naturally.
What can Infertility be a Result of? (2)
-Insufficient Levels of Reproductive Hormones.
-Issues with the Female Reproductive System.
What are the Common Treatments for Infertility? (2)
-Hormone Pills.
-IVF Treatment.
What is ‘IVF Treatment’?
Eggs are Fertilised by Sperm Outside of the Body.
Explain the Process of IVF Treatment: (4)
-Giving Mother FSH & LH to Stimulate the Maturation of Several Eggs.
-The Eggs are Collected from the Mother, & Fertilised by Sperm from the Father in the Laboratory.
-The Fertilised Eggs Develop into Embryos.
-At the Stage when they are tiny balls of Cells, one or two Embryos are Inserted into the Mother’s Uterus (Womb).
What are Potential Issues with Fertility Treatments? (5)
-Because several Embryos are Implanted, the Risk of Multiple Births is high, so higher Risk of Miscarriages/ Stillbirths.
-Success Rate is quite Low, though Improving Slowly.
-Some Women use IVF to get Pregnant at a Later Age than they would be able to Conceive Naturally.
-Ethical Issues with IVF Embryos.
-Genetic Testing is not Allowed.
