Biological Approach Flashcards
3 main factors in the biological approach.
- the role of genetics
- neurochemical basis of behaviour
- hormones
From a biological perspective what would you research to understand human behaviour ?
The brains structure and functions
Define genetic basis of behaviour.
whether behavioural characteristics such as intelligence, personality, mental disorders etc. are inherited in the same way as physical characteristics such as eye colour and height.
Most studies were done on twins what is one disadvantage of researching twins?
They would have experienced similar things making it harder to disentangle the environment.
How much DNA is shared in Identical or monozygotic twins ?
100%
How much DNA is shard in Fraternal( non - identical) or dizygotic twins?
50%
If monozygotic twins have a higher concordance rate than dizygotic twins what does this suggest for explanation for behaviour.
Would suggest that behaviour is from a genetic basis.
What’s an explanation for why dizygotic twins have a higher concordance rate than ordinary siblings even though they both have 50% of the same DNA?
Because dizygotic twins grow up at the same time experiencing more of the same things than ordinarily siblings.
What is genotype ?
The actual genetic make up of a person.
What is a Phenotype ?
It is the way the gene is expressed through observable characteristics e.g. curly hair
What is neurochemical basis of behaviour ?
It refer to how levels of neurotransmitters may affect behaviour.
If you have large ventricles in your brain what does this mean?
That there is more liquid in your brain taking up space meat for neurons and can lead to mental disorders.
