Bioenergetics Flashcards
Is photosynthesis exo or endothermic
Endothermic
How do plants get Carbon Dioxide
The stomata is opened up and it comes in through diffusion
All the uses and stores of the glucose produced in photosynthesis
Stored as startch, fats and oils
Used to produce cellulose or amino acids
Limiting factors of photosynthesis
Light Intensity, Carbon dioxide air levels, temperature
Effect of Light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis
- 20cm3 of Sodium hydrogen carbonate solution in a boiling tube
- 10cm of pondweed with paper clip to one end
- Clamp boiling tube in place
- Place meter ruler next to clamp stand
- Place lamp 10cm away from pondweed
- Wait 2 mins until pond weed produces bubbles
- Count number of bubbles produced per minute using stopwatch
- Repeat steps 5-7 moving lamp 10cm further each time
- Repeat experiment twice more
Photosynthesis limiting reactant graph shape
Increasing the limiting reactant increases the rate of photosynthesis, however after a certain point the graph shape plateus as something else becomes the limiting reactant
Features of a greenhouse that increase rate of photosynthesis and therefore plant growth
Temperature- Sun’s rays are trapped as heat in a greenhouse
Light intensity- Greenhouses are see through and often have artificial lights
Carbon dioxide- Paraffin heater heats the greenhouse and produces carbon dioxide
What is the inverse square law with bioenergetics
Intensity of light is inversely proportional to the square distance from the source
Light intenisty equation
Light intensity = 1/distancexdistance
Is respiration exo or endothermic
Exothermic
Anaerobic respiration symbol equation
C6H1206 —> 2C3H603 + ATP (energy)
Example of anaerobic respiration apart from humans
Yeast (fermentation)
Yeast anaerobic respiration equation
C6H1206 —> C2H5OH + C02 + ATP
Why does the heart rate increase when we exercise
When someone execises theior muscles need more energy to move. The heart rate increases so more blood and oxygen can be pumped around the body to the muscles that need it, this oxygen is then used in respiration to get more energy for the muscles
What do you have after you do anerobic respiration
Oxygen debt, lactic acid
