Bio Pack One Flashcards
Central nervous system components
The brain
The spinal chord
The brain
Draws together information from all over the body and send information back out to the body in response
The spinal chord
Contains the nerves that carry messages between the brain and the body
The central nervous system
The cans is a central prossesor of information and the control centre for human behaviour
The peripheral nervous system
Branches out from the spinal cord , it is a web of nerves carrying information to and from the cans to the rest of the body
The role of the CNS in human behaviour
The CNS acts as an information processing and control centre for information we receive and responses that we make in our environment
When the body receives information from the senses the pns sends it to the CNS. The brain processes and integrates all of the information from the senses and generates a response
Frontal lobe
Decision making
Problem solving
And planning
The parietal lobe
Reception and processing of sensory information from the body
Occipital lobe
Vision
Visiospacial process
Distance + depth perception
Colour + face recognition
Temporal lobe
Memory
Emotion
Hearing and language
Pre frontal cortex
Part of the frontal lobe sits right behind the forehead
Only fully functional in 20s
Inhibiting inappropriate responses, decision making and motivational behaviour
Phineas cage
One of the earliest studies
Became aggressive and irresponsible
Showing prefrontal cortex is involved in the moderation of our aggressive and violent behaviour
Key assumptions
All behaviour is to do with biological factors
The central nervous system is a major influence on behaviour
Behavioural and psychological development is assumed to be based on changes in the brain and general biology
The process of evolution can explain the existence o much human behaviour, behaviour has evolved so that behaviours that help us survive are more likely to be passed down to future generations
Genes can influence behaviour
There is behavioural continuity between species so it makes sense to study animals and make generalisation to humans
Two hemispheres of the brain
Left - analytic thought
Logic
Language
Science & math
Holistic thought
Intuition
Creativity
Art & music
Th corpus callosum
Hemispheres joined together by a massive bundle of nerves
Ensure hemisphere’s can communicate
