bio final Flashcards
whats the difference between a larger SA:V ration than a smaller one?
larger SA:V ratio makes a more efficient cell than the smaller ratio
what specific adaptation can cells have to increase their SA:V ratio?
fold membranes
what do all cells have in common
they all come from the same major classes of organic molecules : Carbs, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids
What are glycoproteins and what is their function?
glycoproteins are molecules that comprise protein and Carbohydrate chains that are involved in many functions including immunity/infections
how are proteins made and transported, and ultimately secreted from the cell?
rough er –> into the cytoplasm of the cell
what happens in mitosis?
eukaryotic cell nucleus splits into 2, followed by the division of the 2 parent cells into 2 daughter cells
- genetically indentical “daughter” cells from a single “parent” cell
what happens in meiosis?
- produces haploid cells
- produces 4 genetically different daughter cells
what causes genetic variations in populations? why is this important?
Genetic variations can arise from gene variants (also called mutations) or from a normal process in which genetic material is rearranged as a cell gets ready to divide (known as genetic recombination). Genetic variations that alter gene activity or protein function can introduce different traits in an organism.
