Bio (Exam 4) Cell Cycle and Mitosis Flashcards
Cell Cycle and Mitosis Chapter
Describe two reasons why eukaryotic cells divide and replicate through mitosis
To produce new body cells for growth and healing.
What are somatic cells?
Examples?
Somatic cells are cells of the body
Ex: skin, brain, heart, stomach and bones
What is interphase?
Mitosis
Preparation of division
What is cytokinesis?
Mitosis
division of a cell at the end bringing the seperation into two daughter cells.
What is a chromosome, centromere, and kinetochore?
Chromose is packaged and structured DNA molecule
Centromere holds the two sister chromatids together
Kinetochore attaches sister chromatids to spindle fibers
Describe how divided chromosomes migrate to opposite ends of the dividing cell
They are pulled by spindle fibers attached to kinetochore regions
Humans have how many chromosomes?
46
PMAT
Prophase, Prometaphase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase
Anaphase “Away”
chromosomes move away and pulled to opposite poles
Telophase “T for Two”
Two identical cells of 46 chromosomes
Mitosis goal
make identical cells
Metaphase M for “middle”
chromosomes line up along middle of cell
attached to chromatids
