Bio Chapter 5 Proteins Flashcards
Passive transport
Allow ions or small molecules to cross a membrane to the side where they are less concentrated. High—> Low. Requires NO energy.
Facilitated diffusion
Passive transport mechanism in which a solute moves across a membrane through a transport protein. Movement of molecules that cannot pass directly through the membrane lipids. These molecules MUST combine with carrier proteins to move across the membrane, follow the concentration gradient high—> Low. Requires NO energy.
What is an example of facilitated diffusion?
Glucose needs a transport protein because it is too big to pass through a cell. High—> Low concentration.
Active transport
A transport protein will pump a solute across the cell membrane AGAINST its concentration gradient. Low—> High. Requires Energy.
Enzymes
Speed a specific reaction. Membranes provide a relatively stable reaction site for enzymes that work in series with other molecules.
