Bio 150- Intro Flashcards
Biology is simply the study of
life, of living things
Anatomy is the study of
structure
Physiology is the study of
function
Levels of organization
- Atoms
- Molecules and macromolecules
- Organelles
- Cells (cytology = study of cells)
- Tissues (histology = study of tissues)
- Organs
- Systems
- Organisms
Anatomy is: these 5 aspects
Name Structure Function Location Relationship
Anatomists use a variety of terms to describe locations on the body:
Regional terms
Directional terms
Sectional planes
Body cavities
Sectional Planes (3)
- Frontal (or coronal) plane
- Transverse (or horizontal) plane
- Sagittal plane
Body cavities
Can be a general term (e.g., thoracic cavity, abdominopelvic cavity) or a “true” body cavity
True body cavities are:
- Closed
- Fluid-filled (serous fluid)
- Lined by a serous membrane (serosa)
Each is lined by two serous membranes:
- Visceral membrane (on the organ itself)
- Parietal membrane (on the body wall side)
- Serous fluid in between: protection
Pleural cavities:
contain the lungs (L&R)
Pericardial cavity contains the
heart
Both are located in the
thoracic cavity/ region
Mediastinum:
contains the heart, other medial organs (such as?), and separates the two pleural cavities
Peritoneal Cavity
Forms part of the abdominopelvic cavity
Organs that are “behind” the peritoneal cavity are retroperitoneal
Organs that are “below” the peritoneal cavity are infraperitoneal
