Big Data Flashcards
What is big data?
A collection of all data sources
Why is data collected?
So it can be processed and analysed to be used to aid decision making
What does data turn into after being processed?
Information
What can information be used for within an organisation (8 things)?
decision making monitoring, controlling, and coordinating analysing problems visualising complex problems optimisation creating new projects visibility traceability
What are the three types of data?
discrete quantitative
continuous quantitative
qualitative
What are the five attributes of big data?
volume: amount of data
velocity: speed of data generation/change
variety: forms of data
veracity: reliability of data
value: meaningful data
What has led to the growth of data sets?
The increase in easily accessible high capacity storage and accessible data
Why is analysing real-time customer data important for businesses?
It allows businesses to identify consumer behaviour patterns so they can adapt to them
As a data analysis tool, what is big data useful for?
Systematically extracting information, and analysing and making sense of difficult and large data sets
What types of technology can be used to analyse big data?
Special technologies are required to organise and analyse big data, including artificial intelligence
What is machine learning?
A set of algorithms used to make a system “artificially intelligent”
What benefit does artificial intelligence bring to big data analysis?
It enables systems to recognise patterns from large data sets and apply the findings to new data
What is a challenge that comes with big data?
Ownership and access rights to collected data
What are the ethical challenges of big data?
Customers wanting their data to be kept private and not be shared with companies, but wanting the benefits of companies having insightful knowledge of them
What is a possible solution to the ethical problem of big data?
Either anonymising the data, or the creation of legislation, such as the GDPR
