Q

Distinctive feature of four gospels

A

Matthew (Messiah)
* Written to Jews to convince that Jesus is the Messiah
* Yet with strong emphasis on Gentile mission
* Fulfillment motif
* Emphasis on church

Mark (Good News of Son of God)
* Action packed – “immediately” some 50 times; short and compact
* Mark reflects Peter’s first-hand account
* Emphasis on suffering with Jesus
* Written for Gentiles

Luke (Accurate/historical account)
* Orderly report of salvation history to give assurance to the faithful
* Most word count/original stories
* Written to Gentiles; emphasize theological import of salvation
* Focus on outcasts (Samaritans, women, poor)

John (that you might believe Jesus is son of God)
* Proves that Jesus is Son of God and fulfilment of the temple
* Johannine dualisms
* Christ is Son of God (King), Savior (Priest), and Revealer of God’s saving acts (Prophet)

Q

Three of Jesus’ Parables

A

Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15):
* The different types of soil represent four different types of people.
* The parable is primarily about the kingdom coming into the world in hidden form, as a seed, and how people will respond to its coming.
* Path—devil comes and snatches I away before it takes root
* Rock—initially sinks in but no roots, when tested proves to be bad
* Thorns—choked out by the cares of this world
* Good—produces fruit

Parable of the Prodigal Son or the Lost Sons (Luke 15:11-32)
* A father with two sons has the younger one ask for his inheritance and he squanders it in a foreign land.
* Sorry for his actions, the younger son returns to find his father running towards him with joy.
* The father throws a huge celebration to celebrate his return.
* The older brother, who was obedient, refuses to celebrate his younger brother’s return.
* This highlights the Pharisees response (like the older brother) to the sinners responding to Jesus’ message.

Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14)
* Jesus uses the example of a tax collector praying in the temple and a Pharisee praying in the temple.
* The tax collector cries out for mercy while the Pharisee thanks God that he is not like this man.
* It is a rebuke to those who are confident in their own righteousness and unaware of their own sin.
* Spoken to show that one is justified by faith in the mercy of God alone.

Three of Jesus’ Miracles

A

Water into Wine at Wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11)
* Wedding at Cana in Galilee, wine runs out before the reception is over.
* Mary tells Jesus the wine has run out. Jesus strangely says, “My hour has not yet come.”
* Jesus has a servant fill six jars with water, turns it into fine wine, and it is given to the master of the feast who mentions, “the best wine has been saved for last.”
* This signifies Jesus as the fulfillment of the OT prophecy of new wine signifying the coming of the Messiah, signifies that Jesus fulfills the Jewish ceremonial law to the “brim,” and the quality of wine signifies the quality, lavishness, and superior glory of what Christ has come to bring in His grace.

Feeding of the 5000 (John 6:1-14)
* Jesus demonstrates his compassion for the people who had come so far and sat so long to hear his teaching.
* Jesus prays and the Father multiplies the bread/fish so that all are fed and there are 12 basketfuls left over.
* In this, Jesus shows himself to be the Bread of Life for all men, and that in him is abundant grace.

Raising Lazarus from the Dead (John 11:38-44)
* Jesus intentionally delays his arrival so that he might demonstrate his power over death.
* Mary and Martha wanted a healing and Jesus gave them a resurrection.
* This also shows Jesus’ compassion to those who bear the scars of the fallen world (when he weeps).
