A

reform of traditional italian comedy led by Carlo Goldoni:

  1. abandoned the masks (they inhibited facial features)
  2. substituted subjects based on life, he believed comedy should reflect nature; like moliere he depicted foibles of the middle and lower class (depicted characters absent from commedia dell’arte)
  3. the stock characters of commedia became humanized and softened
