Benign Conditions of the Cervix Flashcards
What is Cervical Ectropion?
Collumnar epithelium of endocervix is visible as red area around the os of cervix
Outline the cause of Cervical Ectropion
- Due to eversion and is normal in younger women - particularly pregnant/ on pill
How does Cervical Ectropion usually present?
- Asymptomatic
- Occasionally vaginal discharge/ post-coital bleeding
- Exposed collumnar epithelium also prone to infection
Outline the treatment for Cervical Ectropion
- Freezing (cryotherapy) without anaesthetic
- Only AFTER smear & colposcopy [excluding carcinoma]
What is Acute Cervicitis?
Outline its causes
- Inflammation of cervix acutely!! HAHA!
- Causes
- Sexually transmitted disease
- Ulceration/ infection in severe prolapse when cervix protrudes/ pessary irritation
What is Chronic Cervicitis?
Outline causes
Chronic inflammation or infection
Often of ectropion
Outline presentation of Chronic Cervicitis
Common cause of vaginal discharge
Inflammatory smears
Outline treatment of Chronic Cervicitis
- Cryotherapy for extropion
- +/- Antibiotics [bacteria]
What are Cervical Polyps
Benign tumours of endocervical epithelium
In whom do Cervical Polyps usually present
Women <40yrs
Usually <1cm
How do Cervical Polyps usually present?
Assymptomatic
IMB/ PCB
How do you treat Cervical Polyps
- Small
- Avulsed without anaesthetic
- & Examined Histologically
What are Nabothian follicles?
Outline pathophys
Squamous epithelium formed by metaplasia over endocervical cells
Stratified squamous epithelium of ectocervix [outer] grows over simple collumnar of endocervix [inner]
Collumnar secretions trapped & form retention cysts - white swellings
How do you treat Nabothian follicles
Not needed unless symptomatic (RARE)
