What was the aim of Reisingers study?
To find out whether a behavioural therapy, token economy, could be used to treat an in-patient with a diagnosis of depression
What is the principle behind behavioural treatments for depression?
That depressed behaviours are learned and can therefore be unlearned through re-enforcing non-depressive behaviours

A white female, aged 20 who had been an inpatient for 6 years
What was the participant informed of before the study?
How she could gain or be fined tokens (poker chips)
What could the tokens be used for?
They could be traded in for better sleeping facilities, to watch television and go on trips etc.
When did the participant receive a token?
When the staff at the hospital observed her smiling
What else was given to the participant besides tokens?
Social reinforcements such as ‘well done’
What resulted in the removal of a token?
If the participant cried
How long did the procedure last?
20 weeks
What was the smiling response operationalised as?
A slight opening of the mouth and an upward turning of the lips
What was the crying response operationalised as?
Tears coming from eyes for 5-30 minutes
How often were responses recorded by staff?
Three times a day
How far away were the observers when making recordings?
At least 10ft
How was inter reliability ensured?
More than one person recorded the responses
