What is the most common affective disorder?
Depression
Define an affective disorder
A disorder that produces disabling moods that prevent an individual from leading a normal life, at work, socially or within their family
What are the two types of depression?
Major and manic depression
What is major depression?
An episode of depression that can occur suddenly. It may may reactive (caused by external factors) or endogenous (caused by internal factors)
What is manic depression?
Alternation between two extreme moods such as mania and depression. It is also known as bi-polar
What are some of the emotional responses to depression?
Sadness, depressed mood, loss of energy and irritability
What are some of the physiological responses to depression?
Sleep disruption, agitation, fatigue and loss of energy
What are some of the cognitive responses to depression?
Poor concentration, indecisiveness, poor self-esteem, sense of worthlessness, thoughts of suicide/self-harm and dellusions or hallucinations
In the DSM-IV classification, what symptoms must patients have five or more of to be diagnosed as depressed?
Insomnia most nights, fidgeting, tiredness, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, less ability to concentrate and have recurrent thoughts of death

Loss of interest and enjoyment, reduced energy, bleak and pessimistic views of the future, reduced concentration and attention and reduced appetite
