Behavioural Approach Treating Phobia Systematic Desensitation Flashcards
What’s the aim of systematic desensitisation
Use classical conditioning to unlearn a maladaptive b response to a phobic stimulus
Relaxation: Rihanna
Patient is taught how to relax using muscle relaxation
Hierarchy of anxiety
-Make graded scale= stimuli that scares least to most
-e.g scared of wasp a pic of wasp low nd being put in a room with wasp highest
Gradual exposure
-client gradually exposed to least feared situation
-may feel anxious but encouraged to put relaxation tech into practice
-known= reciprocal inhibition- two incompatible states of mind cannot co-exist at the same time e.g anxiety and relaxation
Complete treatment
Completed treatment when they are desensitised nd are able to move trough the hierarchy without anxiety
AO3 strength systematic desensitisation
P-high control over own therapy
E-create own hierarchy of anxiety with therapist, gradually exposed to feared stimuli nd move only when fully relaxed
E-unlike flooding= quite traumatic for patient as immediately exposed to feared stimuli= cause high anxiety levels
L-appropriate treatment patient often opt for this therapy and are less likely to drop out
AO3 limitation systemic desensitisation
P-despite being effective may not be appropriate For all patients requires motivation nd commitment from patients.
E-patient attend sess over a period of time nd be exposed to anxiety provoking situation= stop therapy
E-unlike drug therapy requires little motivation and commitment as only take tablet reduce anxiety dosent require will power
L-limiting
