Behavioral Therapies Flashcards
What is the hallmark of classical conditioning?
Association of things takes place together in time.
What are the variables in classical conditioning?
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)- Food Unconditioned Response (UR)- Salivation Conditioned Stimulus (CS)- Bell Conditioned Response (CR)- Salivation
What is Extinction?
Eliminate a Conditioned Response by taking away the conditioned stimulus.
i.e. give the dog food without the bell
What is generalization?
Other similar stimuli/situations to the CS evoke the CR.
i.e. the way you say something to your dog probably evokes a similar response regardless of the actual words
How do you treat phobias with classical conditioning?
Pair an UCS (deep breathing) with the CS (the phobia) in order to get the UCR (relaxation)
The UCR will become the CR to the CS (phobia evokes relaxation)
Describe Systematic Desensitization
Mira makes a list of fears with feet being number 1.
1. you have her talk about feet while meditating
2. Show her pictures of feet while meditating
3. Show her your feet while meditating
4. Have her touch your feet.
“Low and Slow” technique
In operant conditioning, does learning take place simultaneously or sequentially?
Sequentially
Reinforcement vs. Punishment
ReINforcement= INcreased behavior Punishment= Decreased behavior
Positive vs. Negative in operant conditioning
Positive= adding something Negative= subtracting something
Describe positive reinforcement
Addition of something to increase behavior
“Get up and I’ll make you breakfast”
Describe Negative Reinforcement
Removal of something aversive to increase behavior
“If you get up I’ll stop hitting you with a pillow”
Describe Positive Punishment
Doing something aversive to decrease behavior
“Wear that shirt and you owe me $5”
Describe Negative Punishment
Taking something away to decrease behavior
“No dessert because you didn’t eat dinner”
According to research does Punishment or Reinforcement seem to work better?
Reinforcement. Punishment only temporarily suppresses behavior, is not applicable in all situations, and does not demonstrate the correct behavior.
Doesn’t matter, kids these days should be smacked around a little like i was as a wee lad!
