Behavioral Change and Psychological Theories Flashcards
Theory vs Model
Theory
- used to explain and predict behavior
- suggest ways to create behavior change
Model
- ideas/concepts from 2+ theories used together
Health Belief Model
Developing health messages by taking into account a person’s perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action, self-efficacy
Theory of Planned Behavior
Predicting if a person will perform a health behavior by examining their intention. Individual motivational factors. Intention is determined by 3 factors: attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control
Social Cognitive Theory
Examining the influence of personal factors, behavioral factors, and environmental factors on a person. Uses observational learning and reinforcements in light of these factors.
Stages of Change Model/Trans-Theoretical Model
Describes someone’s motivation and readiness to change a behavior. Emphasizes that health interventions need to meet people where they are. Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance, Relapse, Termination
Choosing a theory
Health issue with barriers = HBM
Health issue demonstrated by a model = SCT
Health issue with a population that is routinely influenced by other people = TPB
