Beck's cognitive models Flashcards
Beck’s cognitive model
Dysfunctional schemata (created bc of (early) life experience) lead to maladaptive beliefs/negative thoughts. Critical incidents increase these beliefs.
Cognitive error’s
Overgeneralization: You fail one thing, you fail at everything. Worthlessness.
Selective abstraction; One bad thing happened, whole day ruined
Dichotomous thinking; All good or all bad, no in between
Cognitive (processing) biases
Beck’s change of his model. Due to computers and looking at RT tasks eg. Showed difference in what people report, like selective attention
Dot-probe task
Showed selective attention, only when words presented longer. Shows attention to negative; caused by difficulty in disengagement from negative.
Possible clinical method for implicit
It’s not about what you think but about how, therefore not so much cognitive therapy, but trying to modify biases. Has mixed evidence tho. Eg trying to change the interpretations they have by teaching them to focus on positive
