avoidance (not going near phobic objects)
panic (e.g. screaming, running, automatic response)
failure to function (cannot take part in normal activities)
emotional characteristics of phobias
anxiety (high state of arousal, difficult to relax)
fear (intense emotional state- unpleasant alertness)
cognitive characteristics of phobias
difficulty in concentrating (constant focusing on phobic object)
irrational thoughts (believing the phobic stimulus could harm them)
behavioural characteristics of depression
increase in aggression (towards other people or self-harm)
changes to eating (weight gain or loss)
reduction in activity level (lacking energy to do every day tasks)
emotional characteristics of depression
sadness (low mood)
guilt (helplessness)
cognitive characteristics of depression
suicidal ideals
poor concentration (cannot give full attention on tasks)
negative schemas (negative biases about themselves, world and future)
behavioural characteristics of OCD
repetitive compulsions (driven to perform behaviours to alleviate anxiety)
avoidance (avoid being in triggering situations)
emotional characteristics of OCD
extreme anxiety and distress (from persistent obsessions)
depression (sadness from being unable to control anxiety causing thoughts and OCD symptons take over their life)
guilt and disgust (irrational over minor issues towards self or external object)
cognitive characteristics of OCD
obsessions (intrusive, irrational recurrent thoughts that are unpleasant)
hyperviligance (constantly alert)/ selective attention (always focused on objects connected to the obsession)
insight and awareness of irrational behaviour and anxiety- doesnt stop obsessions or compulsions
