what responsibility do researchers have?
they have a moral responsibility to protect research participants from harm
what does ethics refer to?
the correct rules of conduct necessary when carrying out research
why do ethical guidelines exist?
to the protect dignity, rights and welfare of research participants
what do ethical guidelines help ensure?
-participant privacy
-protection and reliability
what is an ethics committee?
they consider all the ethical implications and how the researcher plans to deal with them. they use the BPS guidelines and carry out a cost-benefit-analysis to determine whether to approve the research
-every research institution must have one
who makes up the ethics comittee?
a range of members who have broad experience of psychological research, as well as two external members
why is it important to have a lay person on a comittee?
it provides a different perspective, different angles and viewpoints of questions can be asked for example
what are the four BPS ethical principles that all psychologists should possess?
-respect
-competence
-responsibility
-integrity
what responsibility do psychologists have to their participants?
to protect their participants from physical and emotional harm
-they should be exposed to no more risk than they would expect to experience in everyday life.
-risk should be minimal and pose no long term harm or prolonged personal discomfort.
how should participants leave a research study?
in the same emotional and physical state in which they arrived
why can protecting participants be difficult for researchers?
-it can be hard to know if research will involve breaches in privacy and interfere with their physical and mental health
-it can be sometimes impossible to establish ppts emotional and physical state before hand
what is informed consent?
agreeing to something before the study
-a participant is told the aims of the research, nature of the procedure and the purpose of their role
-this can be verbal or written
why is deception important?
researchers should not withhold any information from participants or actively mislead them about the true nature of the study they are to be involved in
-different types of deception include deliberate misleading and deception by omission
what does confidentiality mean?
keeping information private
-participants should feel confident that the study’s report won’t reveal information or data that makes is possible for individual participants to be identified.
-should remain anonymous
what is the right to withdraw?
participants should be allowed too leave at any point during the study if they decide they no longer want to take part
