why is defining abnormality not a simple task?
-hard to define what ‘normal’ is
-social expectations and norms should be taken into consideration
-context and cultural norms should be thought about
what is the failure to function adequately?
individuals should be classified as abnormal when their behaviour suggests that they cannot cope with everyday life
-unable to take care of themselves properly

behaviour that makes other people feel uncomfortable
e.g. staring lots or avoiding eye contact, personal space invaded

unpredictable and inappropriate behaviour for the situation, behaviour shows a loss of control
