To prevent sores and infection of the oral tissues.

REMEMBER to:
Knock before entering the person’s room.
✔ Address the person by name.
✔ Introduce yourself by name and title
. Explain the procedure to the client
To gain client’s cooperation
Wash hands and observe other
appropriate infection control procedures
such as wearing of disposable gloves
To prevent contamination.
. Provide for client privacy by drawing the
curtains around the bed or closing the
door of the room
To make the client comfortable during the
procedure (Hygiene is a personal matter)
Prepare the client.
* Assist the client to a sitting position in
bed, if health permits. If not assist the
client to a side lying position with the
head turned
To prevent liquid from draining down the client’s
throat
Prepare the equipment.
* Place the towel under the client’s
chin
To prevent the client from getting wet.
Put on disposable clean gloves
To prevent contamination
Moisten the bristles of the tooth
brush with tepid water and apply the
dentifrice to the toothbrush.
To allow the dentifrice or toothpaste to stick on
the toothbrush.
Use a soft toothbrush (a small one for
a child) & the client’s choice of
dentifrice.
To promote comfort
For the client who must remain in
bed, place or hold the curved basin
under the client’s chin, fitting the
small curve around the chin or neck.
The basin will serve as waste receptacle
Inspect the mouth and teeth
To check for possible problems.
