Basics Flashcards
What is normal flora
Bacteria which is on us that prevents pathogenic bacteria from gaining resistance and also aids digestion
What is contamination
Where bacteria that isn’t present at the site of origin is in a sample
What if infection
Bacteria which invades the body and multiplies leading to disease and symptoms
What are the three bacterial classifications
Viral
Bacteria
Fungi
What are virus’s
Small
Invade the cell and need it to replicate
Can be hard to treat
Cause: colds, HIV/AIDS
What are bacteria
Bigger than virsuses
Replicate independently
Treated with antibiotics
Cause: pneumonia/ meningitis
What are fungi
Complex large organisms
E.g yeast and mould
Opportunistic
Cause: athletes foot/thrush
What are the shapes of bacteria
Cocci- circle and can be bunch/bundle/strain
Rods- rectangle. Can be strain or singular
An example of a cocci bunch
Straphlycoccus
Example of a cocci pair
Streptococcus
What are two methods of bacterial classification
Gram stain (microscope) Special based on property (Chen reaction)
How do you do a gram stain
- Stain crystal violet
- Flood with iodine
- Decolours- add ascitone
- Stain with safarm counter stain
What is the difference between gram positive and gram negative organisms
Gram negative (pink) have an outer cell wall
Why is it important to know if a bacteria is gram negative or positive
To determine which antibiotic are appropriate
What is medical microbiology
The study of microorganisms which are capable of causing disease in humans
