Basic terminology Flashcards
What makes up the hindbrain (rhombencephalon)
medulla, pons, cerebellum
What makes up the midbrain (mesencephalon)
tectum (dorsal), tegmentum (ventral)
what makes up the forebrain (prosencephalon)
diencephalon (thalamus and hypothalamus), telencephalon (cerebral cortex and basal ganglia)
Describe the basic terminology for directions relevant to neuroanatomy
Superior (towards the upper most part of the hemisphere)
Inferior (towards the base of the brain)
rostral (towards the front of the animal)
caudal (towards the tail)
anterior - in brainstem and spinal cord (towards the front)
posterior (BT, SC) - (towards the back)
Dorsal (in CH) - superior
ventral (in CH) - inferior
rostral (in CH) - anterior
caudal (in CH) - posterior
what is white matter formed by
collections of nerve fibres with few or no neuronal somata
axons connecting different parts of grey matter together
what is grey matter formed by
aggregations of neuronal cell bodies and their local processes (dendrites and axon terminals)
What is neuropil
The network of intermingled and interconnected neuronal processes which occupies the space between neuronal cell bodies in the grey matter
What do you call collections of nerve cells within the brain
nuclei or ganglia
