the seventh
The chord includes a pitch a minor 7th above the root unless it is qualified.
Qualifiers that affect the 7th raise or lower it by 1 half step.
minor seventh (flat five) chord

the root
The letter name of a chord symbol.
the fifth
The chord includes a pitch a perfect 5th above the root.
Qualifiers that affect the 5th raise or lower it by a half step.
the sixth
The chord includes a pitch a major 6th above the root when the numeral 6 is part of the chord symbol.
delta sign
(Δ)
Orignially used to indicate use of a triad.
It’s meaning has come to include chords of the sixth and major seventh.
the third
The chord includes a pitch a major 3rd above the root.
Qualifiers that affect the 3rd. always lower it a half step.

The blues scale
primarily used as a device while playing the blues.

pentatonic major scale
May be used with M6, M7, and dom 7 chords.

May be used with m7 or as a sub. for the blues scale.

diminished seventh
chord scales
The diminished scale is used for dim 7 chords
Major 6th and Major 7th chord scales
The major or ionian scale is used for tonic M6 or M7 chords.
The lydian scale is used for all other M6 and M7 chords
dominant 7th chord scales
The mixolydian scale is used for all dom 7th chords which move from V-I.
The lydian seventh scale is used for all other dom 7th chords.
minor seventh chord scales
The dorian scale is used for min 7th chords.
minor seven (flat five) chord scales
The locrian scale is used for M7 (♭5) chords
minor 6th and minor / major 7th chord scales
The ascending melodic minor scale is used.
augmented seventh chord scales
The whole tone scale is used for Aug7
anticipation
when you are excited to see your wife … naked
Occurs when a note normaly on the beat is attacked a half beat early.
The result is melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic syncopation.
short percussive note
In swint time, the ♪ or its tied equivalent.
Duration is determined by style and tempo.
long percussive note
In swing time, a note marked with a horizontal (>) accent.
chromatic approach tones
Non-chord tones that approach chord tones or scale approach tones by half steps.
approach tones
(melodic contruction)
Tones that lead into chord tones by a step.
Usually of half beat duration.
Two types:

scale approach tones
Non-chord tones within a given chord scale that approach the chor tones by step.
chord tones
(melodic construction)
May be primarily used.
May be played in any order, in any octave, and with a rhythm pattern aainst that chord.
melody contsruction
Pitches used may be chord tones or approach tones.
altered chords
Created when the 5th, 9th, 11th, and 13th are chromatically altered.
extended chords
Created when the 9th, 11th, or 13th are present in the chord.
lowered 13th
The chord includes a pitch, a minor 13th (m6) above the root when ♭13 or -13 is part of the chord symbol.
(Dom 7 with altered 9 + ♯11 chords)
lowerd 9th
The chord includes a pitch a minor 9th above the root of the chord when “♭9” or -9 is part of the chord symbol.
(Dominant 7th type chords).
natural 11th
The chord include a pitch a perfect 11th (P4) above the root of the chord when 11 is part of the chord symbol.
(min 9, min 9 (♭5), dim9 chords)
raised 11th
The chord includes a pitch an aug 11th (aug 4) above the root when ♯11, +11, is part of the chord symbol.
(Dom9, Aug9, M69, and M9 chords)
suspended 4th
(SUS 4)
The chord includes a pitch a perfect 4th above the root of the chord when SUS 4 is part of the chord symbol.
Replaces M3 as a chord tone.
(Dom7, Dom9, M6, M69, M7, and M9 chords)
raised 9th
The chord includes a pitch an augmented 9th (A2/m3) above the root when ♯9 or +9 is part of the chord symbol.
(Dominant 7th type chords).
natural 13th
The chord includes a ptich a major 13th (M6) above the root when 13 is part of the chord symbol.
(Dom9 ♯11, M9 ♯11 chords)
natural 9th
The chord includes a ptich a major 9th above the root of the chord when “9” is part of the chord symbol.
