baseline test Flashcards
Conformity
When an individual changes their behaviour or beliefs to fit in with those of a group, due to group pressure
What are the 3 types of conformity?
- Internalisation
- Identification
- Compliance
Internalisation
When an individual changes their public or private views or behaviour to match those of a group as the group has genuinely changed the person’s mind. This is a long-lasting change.
Identification
When an individual changes their public views to match those of a group because they value the group and wish to be part of it. The change likely will last long as they are in the presence of the group but is a short-term change.
Compliance
When an individual changes their public but not private behaviour/views to match those of a group- this is a short-term change and the result of normative social influence
What are the 2 explanations for conformity?
- Informational social influence (ISI)
- Normative social influence (NSI)
Informational social influence (ISI)
When someone is influenced because they look to others for guidance - uncertain on how to behave and believe the group knows more than them
Normative social influence (NSI)
When someone is influenced to fit in with the social norms and values of a particular group to gain their approval and not stand out
Extraneous variable
Any variable that you’re not investigating that can potentially affect the outcomes of your research study - can lead to inaccurate conclusions about the relationship between independent and dependent variables.
Positive reinforcement
The introduction of a desirable or pleasant stimulus after a behaviour, making it more likely that the behaviour will reoccur
Negative reinforcement
The process of removing an unpleasant stimulus after the desired behaviour is displayed, making it more likely the behaviour will reoccur
