Baron-Cohen (procedure, Methods) Flashcards
What was the aim of the study?
RME= Reading the Mind in the Eyes task
- To investigate whether the revised eyes test would show a clear impairment in autistic adults (to assess its effectiveness)
- Whether there would be an association between scores on the RET and scores on the AQ.
- Whether there would be sex differences (in non-autsitics) on this task
What were the 5 hypothesis of the Research?
- Autistic ppts will score significantly lower in the revised eyes test that the control group.
- Autistic ppts will score significantly higher on the AQ test than the control group.
- Females in the control group (2/3) will score higher on the eyes test than males (in those groups)
- Males in the control groups (3) will score higher on the AQ than females.
- Scores on the AQ and eyes test would be NEGATIVELY correlated.
What was the research method?
- Lab experiment
- Quasi experiment
Why was the research a quasi- experiment?
- The iv (of autistic or not autistic ) was naturally occurring
- Ppts were not randomly assigned to the conditions and were assigned based on a given characteristic
What was the experimental design
Independent measures design
Why was the experimental design an independent measures design?
Comparisons were made (between different groups of ppts)
What was independent variable?
The type of ppts in each condition
* autistic or not autistic (naturally occuring)
What was the dependent variable?
- score on the the revised eyes test
- scores on the AQ
How was IQ assessed?
- WAIS- R
WAIS-R
- Measures 4 **aspects **of intelligence
- Using tests of (block design, vocabulary, similarities, and picture completion)
How was data collected?
- Self report (AQ)
- Reading the mind in the eyes test
Describe the participants in group 1
- 15 Autistic males
- Age: 29.7
- IQ: 115
-Volunteer sample (through ads in the Autistic society magazine/ support groups) - All diagnosed using the DSM or ICD
How were group one recruited in the study?
- Volunteer sample
- Ads placed in the Autistic Society Magazine ASM
- Support groups
How much males were in group 1?
15
What was the mean age in the ppts of group 1?
29.7
