Define a type.

Noah’s Flood
The sins of the world being washed away by the deluge is a prefigurement of personal sin being washed away by the waters of Baptism.
Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt
Israel passed through the waters of the Red Sea and into safety, while the Egyptian soldiers drowned when they tried to follow. In the same way those who pass through the waters of baptism are freed from the slavery of sin, while their former lives and habits are washed away.

Is the beginning of a Christian’s journey toward the Kingdom of heaven.
What does the word “baptize” mean in Greek?
“to plunge” , “to immerse” or “to dip”
What kind of actions was the word baptism used to describe in the Old Testament?
To describe various religious rites and actions in which blood or water was sprinkled in order to purify a person or thing of uncleanliness.
In what way are the actions of the Old Testament similar to baptism in the New Testament?
In both, water is used to cleanse us of original sin and personal sin.
Who were the Essenes?
Were a sect who practiced daily ritual washings for purification, and then dressed in white garments to share a common meal.
What is one characteristic that Essenes shared with Christians?
(1) They underwent baptism after being dressed in the white garment
(2) Shared the communal meal of the Eucharist
What was the significance or meaning of the Baptism practiced by St John the Baptist?
Was not a sacrament, but was performed in order to manifest the desire to have sins forgiven. John’s baptism was to prepare the way for the Lord, and the Baptism that would be established by Christ.
If Jesus was sinless, why was he baptized by St. John the Baptist?
To fulfill his father’s will and act as an example.
What is sin?
An offence against reason, truth and right conscience. It is failure in genuine love for God.
What are the effects of sin?
It breaks or harms our relationship with God and harms our relationships with others.
Define Original Sin.
Is Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden that caused them to lose the grace of original holiness and become subject to the law of death. It effects everyone that has ever been born except Mary and Jesus.
How does Original Sin affect people today?
Each person is now born in a fallen state, having lost the grace of original holiness and friendship with God. Each person is conceived needing God’s help.
What do we need in order to repair the damage of Original Sin in our lives?
The grace of baptism and the resistance of concupiscence through prayer.
What is concupiscence?
The disordered human appetites or desire that remain even after Baptism, which constitute an inclination to sin.
How is a person enabled to follow Christ in his or her actions?
The sacrament of baptism, and the continued presence of sanctifying grace and actual grace in the soul assist in following Christ.
What is actual sin?
Any thought, word, deed or omission that is contrary to God’s eternal law.
Why do we commit actual sins?
Because we chose to violate God’s law. We place our own will before the will of God.
