Bacteria Flashcards
It is a single celled organisms that lack nucleus or any membrane-bounded organelle.
Bacteria
It is composed of peptidoglycan and it gives shape and support that surrounds the cytoplasmic membrane. It also protects the cell from bursting in hypotonic medium.
Cell Wall
It is a protein-sugar (polysaccharide) molecule
Peptidoglycan
It is the protective covering of bacteria made up of polysaccharide and it keeps bacterium from drying out and protecting it from phagocytosis (engulfing) by larger microorganisms. It also works as food reserve and sticks cells together.
Capsule
It is where cellular growth, metabolism and replication of genetic material takes place. Basically, it sustains the life of a bacteria.
Cytoplasm
It is a semi-permeable membrane which allows only selected materials to move inside and outside of the cells. It is composed of phospholipids, proteins and carbohydrates forming a fluid-mosaic.
Plasma Membrane
It is where the protein synthesis and the transferring of genetic material of the bacterial cells happen.
Ribosome
It is a cellular component that can only be found mostly in prokaryotes like bacteria. It is a hairlike structure that provide the means of locomotion or helps the cell spin.
Flagella
It is a small hairlike projection emerging from the outside of the cell surface. It assist the bacteria to attach to its host.
Pili
It is the genetic transfer mechanism in which it is transferred from a pillus donor to recipient cell or what we call conjugation.
Sex Pili or Fertility Pili
It is a small circular DNA. It exchanges DNA between bacterial cells.
Plasmid
It is a irregularly-shaped section of the prokaryotic cell where DNA is housed. It lacks membrane found in the nucleus and it contains RNA, protein, enzymes used for cellular processes.
