Bacteria Flashcards
What is it?
single celled organisms which are only visible under a light microscope. They also have rigid outer walls which helps to determine their shape. Also, they favour undesirable conditions and when they are not favourable, they survive as spores.
Bacilli
rod shaped with pointed ends
Lactobacilli
rod shaped with round ends
Spirochetes
spiral shaped
Cocci
Circuler shaped
Staphylococci
live in clusters
Streptococci
live in chains
Anaerobic bacteria
live deep inside carious lesions or periodontal pocket and survive with low oxygen levels
Aerobic bacteria
needs oxygen to survive
Antibiotics
taken to kill bacteria causing a severe illness, but can also kill some of the helpful bacteria naturally occurring (especially in digestive system) - therefore associated with stomach pain or diarrhoea
Bactericidal agents
chemicals used to clean externally (work surfaces) that act to kill bacteria
Bacteriostatic agents
chemicals used to clean externally that don’t kill bacteria but prevent them from reproducing and multiplying
diseases and killing
Bacteria reproduce rapidly by fission and collect in colonies which may be seen by the naked eye. For example, dental caries and periodontal disease are caused by a bacterial infection. They are only killed by sterilisation within the dental environment.
