Back muscles Flashcards
Trapezius: Origin?
External occipital protuberance, spinous process of C7-T12
Trapezius: Insertion?

Clavicle
Trapezius: Functional Movement?
Scapular elevation
(Shrugging shoulder)
Scapula retraction (pulling shoulders back)
Trapezius: Resisting the muscle?
Stand behind the patient.
Place hands on their shoulders and ask them to shrug their shoulders upwards against your resistance. Apply downwards pressure to resist the upwards movement
Erector Spinae
(Iliocostalis, Longissimus, Spinalis)
I Love Standing (Postural Muscles): Origin?
Spinous processes of vertebrae
Erector Spinae
(Iliocostalis, Longissimus, Spinalis)
I Love Standing (Postural Muscles): Insertion?
Spinous processes and transverse processes of vertebrae above
Erector Spinae
(Iliocostalis, Longissimus, Spinalis)
I Love Standing (Postural Muscles): Nerve?
Dorsal rami of spinal nerves
Erector Spinae
(Iliocostalis, Longissimus, Spinalis)
I Love Standing (Postural Muscles): Bony Landmarks & Ligaments?
Spinous processes and transverse processes
Erector Spinae
(Iliocostalis, Longissimus, Spinalis)
I Love Standing (Postural Muscles): Functional Movement?
Bilateral extension of spine (back arching), unilateral flexion
Erector Spinae
(Iliocostalis, Longissimus, Spinalis)
I Love Standing (Postural Muscles): Resisting the muscle?
Ask the patient to stand upright and lean backwards as far as possible while you place one hand on their lower back.
Apply gentle pressure to resist the backward movement
Latissimus Dorsi: Origin?
Spinous processes of T7 - L5, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, lower 3-4 ribs
Latissimus Dorsi: Insertion?
Intertubercular groove of humerus
Latissimus Dorsi: Nerve?
Thoracodorsal nerve (C6,C7, C8)
Latissimus Dorsi: Bony Landmarks & Ligaments?
Spinous processes, iliac crest, lower ribs
Latissimus Dorsi: Functional Movement?
Adduction, extension and medial rotation of shoulder
Latissimus Dorsi: Resisting the muscle?
Ask the patient to lie on their side with the arm to be tested on top. Place one hand on their wrist and ask them to lift their arm upward against your resistance. Apply gentle pressure to resist the lifting movement
Rhomboids Minor and Major: Origin?
Spinous process of C7 - t5
Major - Spinous processes of T2-T5
Rhomboids Minor and Major: Insertion?
Medial border of scapula
Rhomboids Minor and Major: Nerve?
Dorsal scapular nerve C4,C5
Rhomboids Minor and Major: Bony Landmarks & Ligaments?
Spinous processes, Scapula & Ligamentum nuchae
Rhomboids Minor and Major: Functional Movement?
Scapula retraction (pulling shoulders back)
Rhomboids Minor and Major: Resisting the muscle?
Stand behind the patient.
Place hands on their shoulders and ask them to pull their shoulder blades together against resistance. Apply gentle pressure to resist the squeezing movement.
Serratus Anterior: Origin?
Lateral surface of Upper 8/9 ribs
Serratus Anterior: Insertion?
Anterior surface of medial border of scapula
Serratus Anterior: Nerve?
Long thoracic nerve C5 - C7
Serratus Anterior: Bony Landmarks & Ligaments?
Ribs 1-8 or 1-9, scapula
Serratus Anterior: Functional Movement?
Protraction of scapula (reaching forward)
Serratus Anterior: Resisting the muscle?
Stand beside the patient. Place one hand on the side of their scapula and ask them to reach forward against your resistance. Apply gentle pressure to resist the forward movement.
Serratus Posterior Inferior and Superior: Origin?
Superior-
Nuchal ligament, Spinous processes of C7 - T3 vertebrae
Inferior -
Spinous processes of T11 - L2 Vertebrae
Serratus Posterior Inferior and Superior: Insertion?
Superior - Ribs 2-5
Inferior - Ribs 9 -12
Serratus Posterior Inferior and Superior: Nerve?
Superior
Intercostal nerves (T1 - T4)
Intercostal nerves T9 - T12
Serratus Posterior Inferior and Superior: Bony Landmarks & Ligaments?
Spinous processes, ribs, Superior - supraspinous lig
Inferior - Interspinous lig
Serratus Posterior Inferior and Superior: Functional Movement?
Superior- Elevale of ribs during forced inhalation
Inferior - Depression of ribs during forced exhalation
Serratus Posterior Inferior and Superior: Resisting the muscle?
Stand behind the patient. Place one hand on their upper back(superior)/ lower back (inferior) ask them to take a deep breath in or exhale forcefully against the resistance.
Apply upward/downward pressure to the movement of the ribs
