Back Flashcards
Superficial extrinsic muscles of back
trapezius and latissimus dorsi
Deep extrinsic muscles of back
levator scapulae, rhomboid minor, and rhomboid major
Intermediate extrinsic muscles of back
serratus posterior superior and serratus posterior inferior
Superficial intrinsic muscles of back
splenius (capitis + cervicis)
Intermediate intrinsic muscles of back
erector spinae = spinalis, longissimus, iliocostalis
Divisions of erector spinae
spinalis: capitis, cervicis, and thoracis
longissimus: capitis, cervicis, and thoracis
iliocostalis: cervicis, thoracis, and lumborum
Deep intrinsic muscles of back
transversospinalis =
semispinalis, multifidus, and rotatores
Divisions of semispinalis
capitis, cervicis, and thoracis
Actions of trapezius
elevates (superior fibers), depresses (lower fibers), and retracts (medial fibers) scapula
Innervation of trapezius
cranial nerve XI (spinal accessory nerve) - main, motor
(sensory) ventral rami of C3 and C4
Blood supply of trapezius
transverse cervical artery (superficial branch)
Actions of latissimus dorsi
extenson, adduction, and medial rotation of arm
Innervation of latissimus dorsi
thoracodorsal nerve
Blood supply of latissimus dorsi
thoracodorsal artery at intertubercular sulcus
Attachments of trapezius
Proximal: external occipital protuberance, spinous processes of C7 and thoracic, nuchal ligament
Distal: lateral third of clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula, and medial end of spine of scapula
Attachments of latissimus dorsi
Proximal: spines of T + L vertebrae, ribs, and iliac crest
Distal: intertubercular sulcus on humerus
Attachments of rhomboid minor
Proximal: nuchal ligament and spinous processes C7-T1
Distal: medial border of scapula at level of spine of scapula
Attachments of rhomboid major
Proximal: spinous processes of upper T vertebrae
Distal: medial border of scapula inferior to spine of scapula
