B9 Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
Respiration is proccess by which organisms exchange gases (especially oxygen and carbon dioxide) with the environment
Is respiration an endothermic or exothermic reaction?
It is an exothermic reaction
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen –> Carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
C6,H12,O6 + 6(O2) —–> 6(CO2) + 6(H2O) + Energy
Where does respiration take place?
Respiration takes place inside the mitochondria found in cells
Why do all living things need too respire?
- To have energy for basic cell functions
- To maintain a constant internal temprature
- For active transport in plants
- To build new molecules
- For muscle constractions
What is your body’s response to exercise?
- Your heart rate increases and the arteries suppying to your muscles widen (Vasodilate)
- Glycogen stored in the muscles is converted back into glucose
- Your breathing rate increases meaning you breath more deeply
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic is respiration with a plentifull supply of oxygen, anaerobic is respiration without (with a lack of) oxygen
What is the word equation for anerobic respiration?
Glucose —–> Lactic acid + Energy
What is muscle fatigue caused by?
Muscle fatigue is caused by the build up of lactic acid from anaerobic respiration
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed after exercise too break down any lactic acid in the muscles
What is the word equation for oxygen debt repayment?
Lactic acid + Oxygen —> Carbon Dioxide + Water
What is a metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum of all the chemical reactions happening in your body
(not just in digestion as many people think)
