B4: Organising Animals And Plants Flashcards
What are some functions of the blood?
- Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide
- Transports nutrients
- Transports salts
- Transports white blood cells
- Transports hormones
- Transports waste products from cell to liver.
What are the 4 main components of blood?
- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
- Platelets
- Plasma
What are the main veins/arteries in the circulatory system?
- Pulmonary artery
- Pulmonary vein
- Vene Cava (Vein)
- Aorta (Artery)
What are the 2 main parts of the heart?
- Atrium (left and right)
- Ventricle (left and right)
How do doctors tackle Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)?
Using Statins and Stents
What does the xylem do?
Carries water and dissolved minerals from roots to leaves
What does the phloem do?
Transport dissolved minerals and water from the leaves around the plant
What does the xylem tissue do?
Carries water and minerals collected from the soil to the rest of the plant
Where is most blood found in the circulatory system?
In the circulatory system, mainly the veins
Why is water constantly lost from a plants leaves?
Due to evaporation
What is the function of the stomata?
To open when gas exchange is neccesary
What factors affect the rate at which water leaves a plant?
- Temprature
- Humidity
- Air movement (wind)
- Light intensity
What is the difference between translocation and transpiration in a plant?
Translocation is the movement of waters and sugars, ALL AROUND the plant.
Transpiration is the movement of water, ONLY UP the plant.
What happens in the leaf of a plant?
The leaf is the site of photosynthesis
What cells control the rate of water loss in a leaf?
Guard cells
What scientific term describes the process of water moving up the plant from the roots to the leaves?
Transpiration stream
What condition could be changed to decrease the rate of water loss in a plants leaves?
Increasing the humidity will decrease the rate of water loss
How can an increasing temperature cause enzymes to become denatured?
High temperatures will begin to break the bonds holding the enzyme together, this will cause the active site of the enzyme to change shape meaning the active site will no longer be complementary to the substrate and they will not fit together
What is a stent?
An expandable tube that can be placed inside an artery to ensure blood can keep on flowing
What is a statin?
A medication that can be take to alter the balance of cholesterol
