B8 Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
Is photosynthesis exothermic or endothermic?
Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction because it takes in light energy.
Why is glucose converted into starch?
Glucose is converted into starch because starch is compact and insoluble meaning it doesn’t cause cells to lose or gain water through osmosis.
How is glucose used in plants?
Glucose is converted into starch, it is also converted into cellulose to strengthen cell walls, it is also converted into fats and oils, it’s combined with nitrates to form amino acids for protein synthesis and finally it is used in respiration to release energy.
What factors affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Temperature, CO2 concentration light intensity and chlorophyll levels.
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
The higher the temperature the higher the rate of photosynthesis up until a certain point where the enzymes denature or when temperature is no longer the limiting factor.
How does CO2 conc. affect the rate of photosynthesis?
The higher the CO2 concentration the higher the rate of photosynthesis until there is another limiting factor stopping the increase.
How does light intesity affect the rate of photosynthesis?
As light intensity increases so does the rate of photosynthesis until it becomes the limiting factor.
What is the inverse square law?
The inverse square law is what links light intensity and distance as light intensity = 1/ distance^2
Farmers can control the conditions plants grow in, how?
Farmers put plants in greenhouses where they can control the temperature, CO2 levels and even the light intensity by using artificial lights. In doing this farmers can increase their yield.
