What is a risk factor?
A risk factor is something that will increase the likelihood to develop a certain disease.
Give examples of risk factors
How much you alcohol you drink, the presence of certain substances in the air, or the presence of certain substances in someone’s body.
What risk factors cause what disease?
The effects of diet, smoking and exercise on cardiovascular disease.
Obesity as a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes.
The effect of alcohol on the liver and brain function.
The effect of smoking on lung disease and lung cancer.
The effects of smoking and alcohol on unborn babies.
Carcinogens, including ionising radiation, as risk factors in cancer.
What is cancer?
Cancer is caused by an uncontrolled cell growth and division triggered by certain changes in cells that leads to growths called tumours.
What is a benign tumour?
A benign tumour is a tumour that stays in one place on the body and doesn’t spread to other areas.
What is a malignant tumour?
A malignant tumour is a cancerous tumour that can grow and spread to other parts of the body as cells break of the tumour and travel in the blood to form secondary tumours.
What factors put you more at risk of cancer?
Smoking, obesity, over-exposure to UV radiation, certain viruses or genetics.
