Who is likely to be on low income?
Lone-parent families Unemployed people Older people Sick people or people with disabilities Families with single earners Unskilled couples (where only one of the couple works, and in unskilled employment).
Where does income mainly come from?
Wages from employment
Profits from your business if you are self-employed
Benefits paid by the government
Money from invested wealth, such as interest on bank accounts or bonds
Money raised through the sale or rent of property you own.
What is the problem with food banks?
many of those food are processed including tinned soup, meat, puddings and pasta sauce rather than fresh produce!
Which could cause long-term risks with deficiency in fibre, calcium, iron and vitamins.
Why are people with low income and who experience poverty more likely to suffer ill health and reduced opportunities for development?
Pollution
Crime rate

What is income?
the amount of money coming into a household, whether it be earned by workers or received in benefits.
what is expenditure?
the amount of money that is outgoing in a household such as rent, council tax, TV licence, house and contents insurance
Why are men more likely to die?
More likely to have manually jobs with more contact with industrial gases etc. More likely to smoke and drink, feel debt stress, trapped etc
What did Paxton and Dixon’s research show?
Research discovered that children growing up in poverty in the 1970’s underachieved academically at school, were less likely to go onto university or college and one-and-a-half times more likely to be unemployed compared to those who did not experience poverty and therefore earned 10% less money over their lifetime.
What is employment status?
whether a person is employed or not (manual or non-manual, part time or full time and future prospects.
Describe manual workers?
The more physical jobs usually done by people, which is often poor paid as it does not require high levels of qualifications.
Describe non-manual workers
A person whosejobinvolves the use of their mind, rather than the use of their hands or physical strength. Often higher paid requiring academia.
What are the positives of employment status?
Social Interaction Belonging Achievement Purpose- role responsibility. Mental health- positive Redundancy
What are the negatives of employment status?
High levels of depression in unemployment.
